NEWPORT-Fire destroyed a track hoe located at Hommel's Rock Quarry at 1788 Highway 73, on Sunday, July 14, the Cocke County Fire Department reported.

A total of two CCFD units and three firefighters, plus six firefighters from the Cosby Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the call of a fire at 2:04 p.m., the CCFD stated.

An employee of the rock quarry on the scene said he first tried a fire extinguisher on the track hoe boom, saw that wouldn't put the fire out, and ran to the office and got two more fire extinguishers, according to a CCFD spokesman.

When the additional fire extinguishers didn't work, a call for firefighters went out.
