NEWPORT-Pay equalization and exploring the possibility of pay increases for county employees were major topics of discussion during a meeting Thursday of the Cocke County Legislative Body's Finance Committee.

Property Assessor Margaret Sorrell told members of the committee, "I'm here begging for my help. I don't mean to be ugly, but I don't think we're treated fairly. I can't see why we have to be the lowest paid in the Courthouse. I'm only asking that my employees be treated fairly."

Sorrell presented salary figures for her staff as compared to those in other departments. The figures indicate her assistant is the lowest paid in the courthouse. In addition, her four other staff members make less than $21,000 per year, less than all other clerks.

"I feel like we stay busy and turn out a lot of work," said Sorrell. "These people have the same bills to pay as everyone else. It's way out of line considering the years of service."
