NEWPORT-Propane gas will drop in price beginning Monday, July 1, from $1.97 to $1.93 per gallon, the Jefferson-Cocke County Utility District decided at its board of commissioners meeting held Thursday, June 27.

The utility in May had 7,286 natural gas customers, up slightly from 7,238 in May 2012; and 4,862 propane customers, down from 5,042 customers in May 2012, officials said.

The board approved natural gas rates for May, of $1.08 for residential customers.

General Manager Tommy Bible, citing advice from the utility's consultant in North Carolina, recommended the employee health insurance contract with Blue Cross-Blue Shield be renewed for one year early this year, on Oct. 1, in order to lock in a low rate and avoid a possible 15-20 percent jump in insurance costs once the government-run health care system, also known as Obamacare, is fully implemented. Renewing the health insurance early would raise rates a more manageable five percent for the utility's employees for the same insurance coverage.
