NEWPORT-Members of the Newport Board of Education meeting Monday evening at Newport Grammar School approved on first reading additions to the NGS zero tolerance policy.

In bringing their policy into alignment with state law, the board approved the addition of a paragraph to include electronic threats.

The policy addition reads, "In accordance with state law, any student who transmits by an electronic device any communication containing a credible threat to cause bodily injury or death to another student or school employee and the transmission of such threat creates actual disruptive activity at the school that requires administrative intervention shall be expelled for a period of not less than one (1) calendar year. The director of schools shall have the authority to modify this expulsion requirement on a case-by-case basis."

The board also added another paragraph, again in accordance with state law, pertaining to a student's assault on a "teacher, principal administrator, or any other employee of the school or school resource officer." Punishment for such an assault calls for the student to "be expelled for a period of not less than one (1) calendar year. The director of schools shall have the authority to modify this expulsion requirement on a case-by-case basis."

Other policy changes and/or amendments included the board's new nepotism policy. Required by state law, the new policy states, "Whenever a person is considered by the director of schools for initial employment in the system and that person is related to a member of the Board, the director of schools, an administrator in the system, a county commissioner, or any appointed or elected county official, the relationship shall be publicly made known to the Board prior to the employment of such person.
