NEWPORT-Some local developers are wanting clarification on Cocke County's road regulations, contending the current policies have virtually halted home construction in the county.
Speaking to the Cocke County Highway Commission Tuesday, developers and residents said current county road regulations are also being applied to private roads and county easements.
"It has taken away our property rights," said Gaylelynne Norwood, spokesperson for the group. "We're going to get our property rights back."
Norwood explained, because of paving costs, developers are now looking to subdivide properties in which roads would be private and maintained by the property owners. She said, however, the Cocke County Planning Commission is requiring even private roads to be built to the new county road standards.
