NEWPORT—Discussion on how to best resolve the issue of a broken crusher at the Cocke County Highway Department continued Tuesday during a meeting of the Highway Commission.

Administrative Assistant Tammy Holdway reported to members that Road Supt. Kenneth Ford is looking to see if used equipment can be purchased.

“It has been there since 1953,” she said. “The estimate is it would cost $140,000 to repair it. They were able to remove some the parts without even removing bolts. They are looking at getting a used one. We have some new jaws for the crusher. But, we only have $45,000 left to spend on the crusher (in the current budget). That money was supposed to be for drilling and blasting.”

Commissioner Danny Shelton said the only was the department could get funds to fix it would be to ask the Cocke County Legislative Body.
