Former Newport resident Doris Nowell Teague, age 84, died Sunday at her residence in Johnson City, where she had lived since 2001.
She was born in Athens, Ga., to John Marshall Nowell and Ruth Gaines Nowell, who were residents of Monroe, Ga. After her father’s death in 1938, her family moved to Macon, Ga., where she graduated from Miller High School. She then attended Sullins College in Bristol, and on a visit to Newport with her roommate Carolyn Sue Clevenger (Cox), she met her future husband, John Abe Teague. They were married April 16, 1948. They were the parents of three sons—John Abe Teague, Jr. Marshall Reece Teague and James Tyler Teague.
While living Newport, Teague was involved in many church, social and civic affairs. She was active in the First United Methodist Church, as a member of the Frankie Russell Missionary Circle and various committees, teaching Sunday school starting the first church kindergarten with Kathleen Sutton.
