NEWPORT—A meeting on Thursday, April 18, signifies a new beginning for the Newport Farmer’s Market as well as a new location.

A group of about 20 people, including current vendors, elected leaders and interested citizens met with Steven Huff of the UT Extension Service at the Newport Community Center. The purpose of the meeting was for re-organization of the board of directors, vendors and other interested persons.

New board members for the group were elected. Diana Steinfield-Hicks of Hicks Farm in Cosby was elected President for 2013. Dawn Suiter, who lives and farms on Netty Mountain, was elected Vice President. Stephanie Parrish, who operates Bear Mountain Bakery, was elected Secretary and Holly Rowe of Holly Tree Farm will act as Treasurer.

Cocke County Mayor Vaughn Moore expressed his enthusiasm for the re-vitalized group. He has recently planted his farm with tulip poplars and clover to provide food for honeybees.
