NEWPORT-Newport and Cocke County residents donated a phenomenal 4.5 tons of canned food to the soup kitchen in Newport on Saturday, May 11.
Coordinator Greg Houk, of the U.S. Post Office, thanked the community for giving so generously with their bags of food that carriers picked up at their mailboxes on Saturday.
"The community and volunteers deserve all the glory," said Houk.
About 9,000 pounds of food were collected in this year's food drive, according to Houk. That compares to about 1,000 pounds collected last year.
