NEWPORT-A motorcyclist that led police on a high-speed chase on an allegedly stolen motorcycle before crashing on Sunday, May 12, remained in "critical" condition as of Monday afternoon at Johnson City Medical Center, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.
Billy Wayne Lee, 36, suffered "non life-threatening" injuries and was transported by helicopter to JCMC, according to Newport Police Department Chief Maurice Shults.
On Sunday, at about 3:40 p.m., officers were patrolling westbound on Highway 25/70 with moving radar, near Enterprise Rent-A-Car, when a black SUV was observed to be traveling east 65 mph in a 50 mph zone, NPD Patrolman Joshua Veridal reported.
Officers immediately made a U-turn in the road and attempted to stop the vehicle, when a dark-colored motorcycle was observed improperly passing the SUV in the outside lane at a "reckless" high rate of speed, headed west, according to Veridal.
Officers allegedly paced the motorcycle in excess of 60 mph. Lee improperly passed another SUV on the right shoulder of the road in an area by the Cocke County Fairgrounds on West Highway 25/70, the report stated.
