NEWPORT-"Please give to the hungry! These are dire times!" pleads Greg Houk, a letter carrier in Newport for the U.S. Post Office, and coordinator of this year's food drive on Saturday, May 11.

Letter carriers will be dropping off bags to people on their routes this week so that they can fill them up for pickup on Saturday, Houk stated.

This year, all the cans of non-perishable food collected will go to the local soup kitchen in town, Feed My Sheep Ministries.

FMS serves hot meals to the hungry and needy seven days a week.

"We served 29,000 meals in 2012," said FMS Director Carol Livingston. In addition, an average of 40 families receive food boxes packed for them and distributed on Sunday, Livingston stated.
