NEWPORT—After an all-day session that ended close to 7 p.m. on Monday, members of the Cocke County Grand Jury reported hearing 169 cases.

Circuit Judge Ben W. Hooper II accepted the grand jury’s report after a long day of work and is expected to take the panel’s second report on Tuesday. At least 85 cases are expected to pass through grand jury during its second day of deliberations.

In its findings on Monday, the grand jury returned 67 true bills of indictment and 19 presentments which were unsealed by Judge Hooper. There are an additional 74 presentments which were sealed by the court and nine “no true bills” clearing defendants of specific charges against them. Many of the charges investigated by grand jurors this week are relatively minor misdemeanor violations, but there are numerous drug-related cases and theft and assault cases.
