NEWPORT-Members of Newport Utilities board of directors voted unanimously Tuesday to spend $43,091, plus labor, to install a new system designed to lesson the odor problem at the company's wastewater treatment center.

The system of stainless steel "tap and saddles" was demonstrated to the board by NU Wastewater Department Manager Carrol Proffitt, who recommended the board approved its installation.

"The $43,901 is versus the $1.6 million needed to cover the 240-foot basin," said Proffitt. "We did not get the $250,000 TVA grant."

After hearing Proffitt's recommendation, board member Bill Costner moved to accept his proposal, with Bill Lewis seconding Costner's motion.
