NEWPORT-A hot start at the plate put the Lady Red in a prime position in the District 2-AAA standings headed into tonights showdown with Morristown West.

Cocke County put eight runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back, en route to a 12-2 victory over Sevier County in five innings.

Mondays victory insures the Lady Red will be no lower than the seventh seed in next months District 2-AAA tournament. With a victory over Morristown West tonight, Cocke County can lock up the sixth seed in the tournament. The Lady Red, with a sweep of Cherokee, can climb as high as fifth in the standings.

Putting up that eight spot in the first inning really helped us, Cocke County coach Jan Sneed said. I thought we played really good defense and had only a few hiccups.

Were hitting the ball well, we just have to come back and do that again tomorrow, Sneed said. This gives us three wins in the (district) and puts us, if we can take this one tomorrow, in good position.
