NEWPORT-The Newport City Council, meeting Tuesday, April 9, selected James Finchum to be the interim city administrator.

"Thank you for laying the burden on me," Finchum joked, as he took his seat at a table near the city mayor and aldermen.

Mayor Connie Ball replied, "We appreciate your willingness to serve."

Finchum will be paid $65,000 a year, plus keep his position and salary as Deputy Chief with the Newport Police Department.

After the meeting, Finchum said he will delegate a lot of the statistics gathering work he does for the police department, as well as supervisory role over shift commanders, detectives, and clerical staff, to the NPD's clerical staff and Police Chief Maurice Shults, so that he can handle the workload as the city's top executive.
