NEWPORT-A Weigel's will be going up in place of the Shoney's Restaurant on Cosby Highway near the 435 exit for westbound Interstate 40 traffic, it was announced at a Newport Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, March 28.

Christopher Ooten, director of real estate for Weigel's, said LKM Properties, acting on behalf of the Weigel's, will tear down Shoney's and build a new structure to include fuel pumps for gas and diesel, and the convenience store.

The city planners, meeting as the Newport Board of Zoning Appeals, granted LKM Properties a rear yard setback two-foot variance in a unanimous decision.

The commissioners also approved a site plan for the new Weigel's.

Ooten said his company has a "conservative" goal of selling 45,000-50,000 gallons of gas a week, and that there will be a total of 20 pumps for customers to use. The convenience store on the property will be a 4,000 square foot building, he said.
