NEWPORT-The atmosphere was electric and the fans were out in full force.

The student section was the largest and rowdiest it’s been all season.

The Cocke County “Red Regiment” even made a special appearance.

And while all of those outside factors did their best to make a difference on Friday, the Cocke County Lady Red still had to put together a great performance on the floor.

They did just that though as they cruised to a 58-29 win over Volunteer.

The victory is Cocke County’s first Region 1-AAA tournament victory since the 1993 season.

Cocke County now squares off with Tennessee High in the semifinals at Daniel Boone High School on Monday at 6 p.m. A victory in that game would guarantee a TSSAA Class AAA Sectional appearance.

"We stepped up and just knocked off a pretty good Volunteer team," Cocke County head coach Jeremy Byrd said. "It's a great job. I just can't explain and can't put into words how good it feels. I'm not surprised at (our teams performance). I'm surprised at how much they’ve trusted me and how hard they’ve worked for me. That's just amazing. I think they've earned every bit of this. They deserve it.”
