NEWPORT-The 2013 Cocke County Elementary Basketball Associations postseason tournament began with three games on the slate at Cocke County High School on Monday.

The opening round of the event was played as the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds battled for the right to advance to face off with the top seeds of the tournament on Tuesday night. Also on tap for Monday night was No. 2 Edgemont girls facing off with No. 7 Northwest.

No. 8 Del Rio takes down No. 9 Smoky Mountain (GIRLS)

The eighth-seeded Lady Trojans of Del Rio Elementary advanced to a Tuesday night quarterfinal date with No. 1 Parrottsville with a 35-27 win over No. 9 Smoky Mountain on Monday.

Del Rio limited the Lady Bears to only three field goals in the second half. The defensive performance allowed the Lady Trojans to overcome an 18-16 deficit at halftime of the game.

After trailing by the two-point margin at intermission, the Lady Trojans led 24-22 after three quarters and then outscored Smoky Mountain by six points over the final period of play.

Amber Turner, who scored a game-high 14 points, had five of those in the second half rally for Del Rio.

Courntey Blevins led Smoky Mountain with nine points, including a pair of three-point baskets.

DEL RIO (35): Amber Turner 14, Kristyn Conard 9, Hannah Sawyer 5, Brooklyn York 4, Kim Duncan 3.

SMOKY MOUNTAIN (27): Courtney Blevins 9, Hayley Susalla 6, Holly Gilland 5, Destany Barnes 3, Britany Barnes 2, Hannah Webb 2.

No. 9 Edgemont takes win over No. 8 Del Rio (BOYS)

An impressive defensive performance in the third quarter helped the Edgemont Panthers earn their second win of the 2012-13 season in Monday nights opening round.

Trailing 17-13 at halftime, Edgemont held Del Rio scoreless over the duration of the third quarter. as they turned a four-point deficit into a 12-point lead.

Cody Clevenger helped the Panthers keep the game close in the opening half as he scored nine of his teams 13 points. Clevenger, along with Alan Caldwell, were instrumental in the Panthers third quarter play as each scored six points apiece in the period.

The Panthers kept up their solid defensive play in the fourth quarter, as Del Rio was limited to only two field goals, as Edgemont closed the game on a powerful 31-6 run.

EDGEMONT (44): Cody Clevenger 17, McKayne Ramsey 8, Alan Caldwell 6, Austin Raines 5, Cameron Dey 2, Jimmy Gorrell 2, Kaelin Jackson 1, Keko Fontes 1.

No. 2 Edgemont cruises past Northwest (GIRLS)

The evenings final contest, which was a quarterfinal round game, saw the Edgemont Lady Panthers dominate on their way to victory over Northwest.

Edgemont jumped out to a 16-2 lead after a quarter of play and scored another 20 points in the second period to hold a 30-point lead at halftime.

Northwest however was able to score 10 points in the second half to maintain pace with the one-loss Lady Panthers squad.

Haley Styles led Edgemont with 14, while Jaden Stewart added 12.

Three players scored four points each for Northwest, including Maria Campos-Nuci, Laura Campos-Nuci and Alyssa Mitchell.

EDGEMONT (46): Haley Styles 14, Jaden Stewart 12, Cassie Manning 9, Kyra Brown 6, Khristina Norton 4, Amber Norton 1.

NORTHWEST (16): Maria Campos-Nuci 4, Laura Campos-Nuci 4, Alyssa Mitchell 4, Lydia Dowdney 2, Sarah Ramirez 2.


Quarterfinal play
continues on Tuesday night

Quarterfinal round play will resume on Tuesday night with a trio of games, featuring the tournaments top seeds.
At 5 p.m. the No. 2 Centerview Falcons will play No. 7 Smoky Mountain. In girls play at 6:15 p.m. No.1 Parrottsville plays No. 8 Del Rio. The night closes with No. 1 Parrottsville taking on No. 9 Edgemont in boys play at 7:30 p.m.
Tournament play will continue on Thursday evening with the remaining four quarterfinal games, beginning at 5 p.m.<
