NEWPORT-One of Newport's oldest and most prominent businessmen, Paul G. Freeman, died Tuesday afternoon at Newport Medical Center after a long period of declining health.

Freeman, 84, was one of the owners and operators of Freeman's Furniture, a business founded by his late parents Talmadge (T. E.) and Rebecca Freeman approximately 80 years ago in the Raven's Branch community of Cocke County as a small, country store.

In 1939, the family moved to Newport and opened a furniture store, the first of an enterprise that would grow into an operation of six stores in the East Tennessee area.

Even though beset by various health issues for over ten years, Freeman remained active in the business until just a few weeks ago.
