NEWPORT-The City of Newport Planning Commission on Thursday, Dec. 27 approved a subdivision request needed for a large expansion of the Food City East supermarket between East Main Street and East Broadway Street.

The roughly 12,000-foot expansion on the eastern side of Food City East will be placed in part of the currently empty former Freeman's Furniture store in the Eastern Plaza Shopping Center.

Tim Kuykendall, vice president of Appalachian Design, located in Blountville, will coordinate the expansion, he said at the planners meeting. His company has been responsible for many other Food City building development projects.

A narrow alley between the eastern side of the current Food City East store and the Freeman's Furniture store will be closed to make room for the expansion of the supermarket. A new alley may be opened further east as part of the expansion; that decision has not been finalized, he said.
