NEWPORT-Members of the Cocke County Board of Education, meeting Thursday night at the Central Office, unanimously approved a change in the county school system's attendance policy.

Beginning in January of 2013, students who miss school because of illness, but who do not have a doctor's note, may still have an excused absence at the discretion of the school principal.

Dennis Balch, Attendance Supervisor, answered questions posed by board members regarding the system's attendance policies.

Balch told the group that while the system does have tardy policies for high school students, it does not have one for elementary students.
