COSBY-The light was green for the Cosby Lady Eagles on Thursday night.
Heeding from a strategy employed by their coach, Lady Eagles midfielder Sunshine Mayfield's goal from 35-yards out in the 37th minute to break a scoreless tie and gave her team all the momentum in a crucial 3-0 win over University High in Region 1-A/AA play. The victory helped to clinch at least a tie for third place in the regional standings, headed into the final week of the regular season.
"She cranked it," Cosby coach Ken Green said following the victory. "We can count on Sunshine to get that foot going.
"She's inevitably going to take that shot, and I don't have a problem with that," Green said.
Cosby's first-year coach said that Mayfield's long-range goal was part of the strategy for the Lady Eagles to help take a more aggressive approach in the game.
"I green lighted them," Green said. "Coming into the second half, they all had the green light for the long shots.
"That's what we wanted to do," Green said. "We wanted to keep their defense pushed back, so that we could keep pushed forward a little bit more."
