SUNSET BEACH, NC-A top-five finish by Newport's Whitney Ball helped lead the LMU women's golf team to their second straight runner-up finish at this week's Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.

Ball led the Lady Railsplitters with rounds of 75 and 73 to finish with a four-over total of 148 for third place.

Ball finished three strokes behind individual medalist Jillian Corum of Tusculum College. For her efforts, Ball was named to the All-Tournament team.

"This is one of the hardest tournaments that we play in, so making All-Tournament is a huge accomplishment," Ball said. "It was another good outing to start my senior season."

The round was Ball's career low at the collegiate level and only helps her seasonal average.
Ball is averaging a score of 76 through three tournaments this fall, with only one more remaining on the schedule October 14-16 in Salisbury, NC.

LMU's Brittany McCown earned the Lady Railsplitter's other top-10 finish with a score of 149 for the two-day tournament.

Saint Leo University won the women's tournament by a 21 stroke margin over LMU.

Another Cocke County High School alumnus, Victoria Barrett, also participated in the tournament.
The 2011 All-Conference golfer for the Lady Red finished with a two-day score of 185 for Mars Hill College.

In men's play at the Intercollegiate, Newport's Zach Briggs finished with a total score of 146 to place 31st.

Briggs, a sophomore at Walters State Community College, shot rounds of 76 and 70 to finish two-over for the tournament.

Walters State finished eighth in the tournament as a team.
