(Last modified: 2010-01-28 08:57:13) Source: The Newport Plain Talk NEWPORT-It's the final week of the regular season for Cocke County's elementary school basketball squads, and the push is on for a big finish. Three nights of basketball this week as squads make up missed action because of weather.
MONDAY, JANUARY 25
(Girls) Edgemont 38 Centerview 18 The Lady Panthers are on a mission to repeat as Large School champions, and they did nothing to hamper that drive against the Lady Falcons Monday night. The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 15-3 first quarter lead and never looked back, leading 25-7 at the half, 34-14 at the end of three, and cruised home with the 20-point victory. Sharina Cofield had a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Panthers while Brooke Holt had six points to lead the Lady Falcons. EDGEMONT (38): Sharina Cofield 14, Bethanie Williams 12, Ashley Green 6, Taylor Thornton 2, Ashley Hayes 2, Delessa Stewart 2. (Boys) Edgemont 53 Centerview 22 The Falcons tried to keep it tight in the early going, but the Purple Panthers were way too much on this night. The Panthers led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, but pushed their lead to 16, 32-16, at the break. The Panthers led 41-19 at the end of three and cruised home with the 31-point victory. Kimbel Thorton had a game-high 15 points to pace the Panthers while Ryder Keedwell had eight points to lead the Falcons. The Lady Parrotts looked as if they would fly away with this one, but the Lady Trojans nearly came from behind in the end. The Lady Parrotts held a 12-6 first quarter lead and pushed it to eight, 21-13, at the half. The Lady Parrott lead was only five, 27-22, at the end of three. And, despite a big push by the Lady Trojans, the Lady Parrotts held on for the two-point victory. Katie Holt and Elizabeth Walker each had 10 points to lead the Lady Parrotts while Autumn Stokely had a game-high 22 points to lead the Lady Trojans. (Boys) Parrottsville 49 Del Rio 24 The Parrotts took control early and kept the Trojans at bay for all four quarters. The Parrotts led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 17, 27-10, at the half. The Parrotts led 35-20 at the end of three and coasted home with the 25-point victory. Jerick Varner had a game-high 12 points to pace the Parrotts while Hunter Phillips had 10 points to lead the Trojans. (Girls) Bridgeport 32 Cosby 27 This was a tight contest and a defensive struggle throughout. The Lady Rockets led by two, 8-6, at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles pulled to within one, 12-11, at the break. The Lady Rockets managed to push their lead to five, 21-16, at the end of three and held off the Lady Eagles over the final six minutes to secure the five-point victory. Alexis Williams had 14 points to lead the Lady Rockets while Tasha Ball had a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Eagles. BRIDGEPORT (32): Alexis Williams 14, Kaley Burgess 13, Megan Finchum 5. (Boys) Bridgeport 52 Cosby 32 The Rockets were a bit too much for the Eagles to handle on this night. The Rockets took off to a 15-5 first quarter lead and led 33-15 at the break. The Rockets led 41-24 at the end of three, and cruised home with the 20-point victory. Patrick Hurst had a game-high 12 points to lead a balanced Rocket attack while Michael Kagel had six points to lead a balanced Eagle attack. (Girls) Smoky Mountain 37 Northwest 10 The Lady Bears jumped on the Lady Patriots early and often. The Lady Bears leaped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and made it 26-2 at the break. The Lady Bears led 33-4 at the end of three and ambled home with the 27-point victory. Cyara Williams and Harley Gregg each had six points to lead the Lady Bears while Cherie Smith had a game-high eight points to pace the Lady Patriots. (Girls) Bridgeport 54 Parrottsville 19 The Lady Parrotts jumped out to a big lead, but the Lady Rockets found their offense in the second quarter, and flew away. The Lady Parrotts led 9-2 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Rockets exploded for 20 second-quarter points, and led 22-11 at the break. The Lady Rockets scored 23 more out of the locker room and led 45-17 at the end of three and cruised home with the 35-point victory. Kaley Burgess had a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Rockets while Katie Holt had six points to lead the Lady Parrotts. The Lady Eagles led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Falcons came back to lead by one, 13-12, at the half. The Lady Eagles soared in front by 10, 26-16, at the end of the third quarter and coasted home with the 13-point victory. Tasha Ball had a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Eagles while Brooke Holt had 10 points to lead the Lady Falcons. (Boys) Cosby 44 Centerview 30 The Falcons made it interesting through three quarters, but the Eagles pulled away in the end. The Eagles led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 23-19 at the half. The Eagles led 32-25 at the end of three and then pulled away for the 14-point victory. Derrick Norris had a game-high 16 points to lead the Eagles while Ryder Keedwell had 11 points to lead the Falcons. The Lady Ravens led 43-13 at the end of three and coasted home with the 38-point victory. Dessie Shaffer had a game-high 13 points to lead the Lady Ravens while Markesha Allen had seven points to lead the Lady Patriots. (Boys) Grassy Fork 41 Northwest 33 The Patriots came storming back for a third-quarter lead, but the Ravens dug deep and pulled it out down the stretch. The Ravens led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter, and made it 20-13 at the half. The Patriots stormed back and led 26-25 heading into the final six minutes. But, the Ravens found some extra energy, and pulled out the eight-point victory. Grassy Fork's Dakota Moore and Northwest's Kinsler Rea shared game-high scoring honors as each finished with 14. Northwest will play at Parrottsville while Smoky Mountain hosts Centerview. Edgemont will travel to Cosby and Del Rio will host Grassy Fork, which will also include a girl's junior varsity game.
