(c) 2009 NPT Photo by Katie Pittser Volunteers Amy Cline, left, and Renae Newcomb, right, work to wake up two patients after their surgeries Saturday during the Big Fix at Sunset Gap Community Center. After the animals are awake and functioning, they are placed in pet carriers until their guardians are able to come back and take them home. The Newport Animal Shelter and Remote Area Medical (RAM) of Knoxville sponsor the Big Fix. This clinic is free of charge. Dr. Carol Hood, DVM, is the director of the Newport Animal Shelter. She explained that the free clinic for spay/neutering and shots for the pets helps in these financially hard times so shelters do not become over-populated with unwanted animals. For anyone who would like to volunteer at the shelter or any fixes may call 423-623-7742 or stop by the Newport Animal Shelter.
