NEWPORT-With the exception of local schoolchildren, it seems as though the majority of Cocke Countians will enjoy a day of vacation on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.
Because of days missed due to snow this past winter, Newport Grammar School and all Cocke County Schools will be in regular session on Monday. "If it hadn't snowed, we'd be out," said a Cocke County school system employee.
All five local banks-National Bank of Tennessee, Newport Federal, Green, Tennessee State, and US-will be closed on Monday and will re-open on regular schedule on Tuesday.
There will be no mail delivery on Monday, but patrons will have access to their post office boxes.
All city and county offices will be closed on Monday and re-open on Tuesday.
The Newport/Cocke County Community Center (including the pool) will be closed on Monday. The City Park pool will open on May 30 at 11 a.m.
Both Newport Utilities and Jefferson-Cocke County Utilities will be closed on Monday and re-open on Tuesday.
The offices of the Newport/Cocke County Chamber of Commerce, Department of Tourism, and Economic Development Commission will be closed Monday and re-open Tuesday.
All four Cocke County libraries-Cosby Community, Del Rio (Marie Ellison Memorial), Parrottsville, and Stokely Memorial-will be closed Monday. Stokely Memorial will reopen Tuesday at 10 a.m., while the other three libraries will resume regular hours on Wednesday.
The office of the Newport Plain Talk will be closed on Monday and reopen on Tuesday.
