Sheriff's

Arrest for failure to appear
Darrell Lynn Heatherly, 41, of 3026 Grandview Way, in White Pine, was arrested Sunday, May 10, and charged with failure to appear in Cocke County General Sessions Court before Judge John Bell on April 20.

DUI and violation of implied consent charges
Florence Prince, 44, was arrested today (May 12) at about 3 a.m. after officers responded to a call of a female knocking on neighbors' doors and saying her car broke down. Prince was allegedly found sitting in her car in the middle of Fowlers Ridge Road. She had "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her person, bloodshot eyes, and (was) unsteady on her feet," according to a report by Sgt. Ricky Holt of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. Prince failed three field sobriety tests and refused to take the Breathalyzer test "the correct way," Holt wrote. Prince is charged with DUI and violation of the implied consent law.

Arrested on warrant out of child support court
Michael L. Bryant, 33, of 745 Under the Mountain Road, in Cosby, was arrested Saturday, May 9, and charged with failure to appear in relation to a warrant issued out of child support court. Constable Nathan White allegedly spotted Bryant crossing a double yellow line on New Cave Church Road.

Six charges in arrest
Jonathan W. Mullins, 21, of 1170 Mountain Vista Drive, in Russellville, was arrested Thursday, May 7, and charged with driving on a suspended license, DUI, violation of the implied consent law, false reports, criminal impersonation, and speeding, according to a report by arresting officer Sgt. Armando Fontes. Mullins has stopped for allegedly driving 48 m.p.h. in a 35 m.p.h. posted speed limit. Mullins allegedly stated he had smoked half a marijuana cigarette about 45 minutes before being stopped. He gave two false names before Fontes told him he would be held until a positive identity could be found.

Multiple charges following car accident
Jess Woody, 46, of 501 Johnson St., was arrested Wednesday, May 6, following an automobile accident on Tuesday, May 5, that involved a 1985 Ford Ranger which left Highway 321 and hit a tree. Woody was allegedly found just across the Cocke County line at L Ranch Motel. He had "a strong odor of alcohol about his person, especially around his mouth when he spoke," according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Joseph Owings and Randy Hartsell. Woody was flown to University of Tennessee Medical Center, treated, released, and arrested. He is charged
with DUI 5th, driving on revoked 5th, HMVO 2nd/leaving the scene of an accident, and no seat belt/no insurance.

Fight alleged at Midnight Rodeo parking lot
Jonathan D. Clavens, 28, of 221 Hicks Road, in Jonesborough, was arrested Sunday, May 10, and charged with disorderly conduct after he allegedly tried to start a fight in the presence of Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton.

Driving with revoked license 3rd offense alleged
Jacen N. Valentine, 28, of 615 Old Sevierville Highway, in Newport, was arrested Sunday, May 10, at 3:30 a.m. after allegedly making a left turn on to C Avenue in front of the Newport Fire Department. Sgt. Armando Fontes of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department wrote in a report that Valentine went from the right lane "well over" into the left lane and traveled in the wrong lane a short distance. His driver's license was revoked. It had previously been revoked Feb. 11, 2004 and Sept. 22, 2008, according to the report. Valentine was arrested for 3rd offense driving while revoked and driving left of center/financial responsibility.

Public intoxication and marijuana charges
Michael Todd Stuteville, 41, of Waynesville, N.C., was arrested Sunday, May 10, and charged with public intoxication and simple possession of marijuana. Constable Nathan White wrote in a report that he observed a vehicle traveling on Highway 321 near North Highway 340 with the driver side headlight out. The driver was arrested for DUI. Stuteville was a passenger in the vehicle. He was "very unstable on his feet, (had) bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol on his person. He also had approximately 1.8 grams of suspected marijuana in his duffle bag.

Five offenses alleged in arrest
Bobby L. Moates, 44, of 190 Boles Lane, in Chuckey, was arrested Sunday, May 10, about 1 a.m. after Constable Nathan White stopped the vehicle he was driving for having a driver side headlight out. Sgt. Armando Fontes of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department arrested Moates who "smelled strongly of alcohol and stated that he had drank one beer." Also found in the car were approximately four grams of marijuana in a Crown Royal bag, nine marijuana "roaches" weighing about 2.2 grams, and about two grams of marijuana in a duffle bag. Officers allegedly found four open bottles of Bud Light and three full ones. Moates is charged with simple possession marijuana, violation of implied consent law, open container alcohol, violation of the light law, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Two capias for arrests
Sue A. Ledford, 56, of 2410 Stone Wall Jackson Drive, in Newport, was arrested at the residence she was staying at and charged with two Capiases for failure to appear in Circuit Court, on July 17, 2008, and Sept. 8, 2008, according to a report by Sgt. Armando Fontes of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.

Burglary charge in Sevier County
Harrison W. Frasier, 35, of Pigeon Forge, was arrested Monday, May 11, at the Cocke County Circuit Court and charged with burglary after Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt learned that the Gatlinburg Police Department had  a warrant out for Frasier's arrest.

Violation of probation charged
Daniel Valentine, 29, of 2316 Highway 32, in Newport, was arrested Monday, May 11, and charged with a probation violation from the Circuit Court of Cocke County, according to Sgt. Daniel Conard of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.

Two vehicles collide in curve
Patrick D. Sane, 17, of 1848 Fairfax Road, in Newport, was headed east on Fairfax Road in a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse when his car collided with a 1985 Dodge pickup driven by Hugh N. Williams, 78, of 507 Seventh St., in Newport, on Monday, May 11 around 8 a.m. Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt wrote in a report  that the vehicles collided in a curve in Fairfax Road near Mannings Chapel Road. Both suffered unspecified injuries.

Vehicle leaves road, rolls over
Brad Dawson, 27, of 105 Briar Thicket Road, in Bybee, was on Sunday, May 10, negotiating a curve on a narrow gravel road, Bear Creek Road, near Phillips Hollow Road, in a 2008 Ford F150 when his back tire went over to the left side of the road, causing the vehicle to slide down an embankment and roll over onto its top. The vehicle suffered "very severe damage," but Dawson was uninjured, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell.

Vehicle Fire
Letitia McGaha, 34, of 135 Roy Road, in Cosby, said she had her vehicle sitting on the back of a wrecker owned by Hartford Towing in order for the vehicle to be transported to a garage for mechanical repair. The wrecker was parked in McGaha's driveway and while the owner slept, the vehicle caught fire, according to a report by Sgt. Armando Fontes of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. McGaha reportedly awoke to the sound of blowing by her vehicle's horn and saw the vehicle fully engulfed in flames at about 1:30 a.m. on Monday, May 11. The Cosby Fire Department responded quickly and prevented the wrecker from sustaining serious damage, according to the report.


Police

Two-vehicle accident at Post Office
Ronnie G. Phillips, 61, of 2578 Larch Road, in Newport, was pulling into the Post Office parking lot in a 2000 Ford F-150 on Monday, May 11, when a 1997 Dodge Intrepid driven by Betty R. Footen, 68, of 405 Lennon Circle, in Newport, backed into Phillips' car. Footen said her accelerator stuck as she was backing from a handicapped parking space, causing the driver side rear bumper of the Dodge to strike the Ford just behind the passenger door. Damage to both vehicles was minimal to moderate, according to Capt. Brad Ball's report.

Stop sign taken out by vehicle
Wayne C. Carpenter, 59, of 264 Elmwood Drive, in Lexington, Ky., was driving a 2006 International Eagle on Monday, May 11, around 11 a.m. in a private drive in the Walmart parking lot. Carpenter was headed north on the drive in the parking lot when he made a left turn into a parking row. The rear side of a trailer tire hit the curb and knocked down a stop sign, valued at approximately $150, according to a report by Lt. Terry Lawson.

Pit Stop Market clerk allegedly assaulted
Amy Ramsey, 39, of 611 Myers Circle, in Newport, was arrested Monday, May 11, and charged with simple assault around 3 p.m. after she allegedly struck a clerk at the Pit Stop Market on the Cosby Highway several times about the face and neck with her fist.  The two had reportedly argued over the cashing of a check, according to arresting officer David R. Smith.

Attempted fraud is alleged
Ivey Lane, 26, of Mineral Street, in Newport, told police she believed she recently was a target of an attempted scam. Lane said she conducts her Avon products business over the Internet and usually only receives email correspondence from prospective customers. However, recently she received an order for $600 of cologne products from a "Jenifa Matix" and later received a check for $3,480.99 to cover the costs. Lane said she felt it was a scam and alerted the police.

Damage to air conditioning unit and residence
Robert D. Self, 78, of Concord Alley, went to the Newport Police Department on Monday, May 11, to report a damaged air conditioning unit and damage to his home that police believed "obviously" occurred at the same time. The unit had apparently been struck by a vehicle and had red paint on it. A suspect had damage to the front bumper of their vehicle that was consistent with the damage to the air conditioning unit. The vehicle's owner said they did not cause the damage, but that several other people had driven the vehicle recently, according to Capt. Brad Ball.

Theft of over $1,000 of medication alleged
Shirley Lewis of Briggs Avenue, in Newport, told Patrolman Billy Woody that while she was away for a few days at a friend's home, someone entered her home between Sunday, May 10, at 9:30 p.m. and the next day, and left the front door open. Reported missing was $1,100 of medication, a Sony CD player worth $100, and a Sony DVD player worth $50. The front door was damaged, as well.

Runaway juvenile?
Wendy Williamson at the Department of Child Services told police that Eva Marie Shirt, 16, left her foster mother's home on Friday, May 8. Her biological mother said Shirt had been dating an adult white male.

Damage to Pepsi vending machine
Robert Huff said that on Saturday, May 9, at 9 a.m., he noticed damage that had been done to a Pepsi vending machine at Food City West, at 181 Western Plaza Way. Damage had been done to dollar bill and change deposit receptacles in the vending machine. No money was taken. Damages were listed at approximately $200.

Items allegedly taken from son's backpack
Madalyn Trent, of Lamons Circle, in Newport, told Patrolman William Garber that on Sunday, April 17, she noticed that someone took two items from her son's backpack that was inside her apartment. She said she had left the front door unlocked between Tuesday, April 12, and Thursday, April 14.  Trent said the items stolen were a Sony PSP with charger (worth $300), and a Sims City PSP game (worth $30).
