Robert Lee (Bob) Sims

Robert Lee (Bob) Sims, age 88, of Sevierville, died October 29, 2013, at Sevier County Health Care Center.

Robert was a member of Fox United Methodist Church.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, as well as a decorated veteran of World War II, farmer, carpenter, and bridge builder.

Robert served in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II from October 1943 until January 1946 as a Private First Class. His combat duty included England, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Holland. He served with Company A 331st Medical Battalion 106th Infantry Lion Division. His company fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received four battle stars for action in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He also earned a Combat Medical Badge, ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. In March of 1991, Robert received a belated Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed army during World War II in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theatre.

Robert retired from Charles Blalock and Sons in July of 1993 with twenty-two years of service as a bridge foreman-superintendent. One of his most memorable projects was lowering the tunnel on the Spur to make it two lanes instead of one. He also supervised construction of numerous bridges and overpasses on Interstate I40, I640, I80, and in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents John and Hulda (Thomas) Sims, and sisters Clessie Seaton, Lynnie French, Estalie Ogle, Ruth Hill, Myrtle Davenport, Gladys Butcher, and Mildred Huff.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years Fern Feezel Sims, his two sons Garry and wife Margurite Sims and Jeff and wife Nancy Sims; grandchildren Kristi Atchley and husband Bryan; Tasha Wade and husband Zach; and Shane Sims and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Ansley and Jordan Atchley, Gretchen and Chaz Wade, and Lillian and Colin Sims; two sisters Ruby Fox and Wilma Woods, and many nieces and nephews.

The family extends a special �Thank you� to the nurses and support staff at Sevier County Health Care Center. They were compassionate and provided excellent care.

The family will receive friends in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville on Friday, November 1, 2013, from 4:00�6:45 p.m. with the funeral service following at 7:00 p.m. led by Pastor Ken Lambert. Interment will be at the Fox Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2013, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 104.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Atchley, Jr., Eric Harvey, Jason Owens, Dwight Payne, Shane Sims, and Zach Wade. Honorary pallbearers will be Woody Allen, A. L. Byrd, Burnett Finchum, Larry Hamilton, Al Prudhomme, Johnny Sims, Fred Sims, and Earl Stiles.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fox United Methodist Church, in care of Golda Coleman, 4105 Newport Hwy., Sevierville, TN 37876 or to the Fox Cemetery, in care of Randy Hodge, 639 Layman Drive, Dandridge, TN 37725.
