George Hurley "Squirrel" Self

George Hurley "Squirrel" Self, Sr., age 79, of Hot Springs, NC went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 23, 2009, at ST. Joseph Hospital in Ashville, NC. His courageous battle with cancer is over. 

SFC, E-7, George H. Self. SR. (Ret) was a Korean War Veteran and was in the Army National Guard, who served his country with pride and honor. Hurley was an outgoing and down to earth person who loved his family and meeting new people. If you met him, you would like to have a conversation with him. 

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father; Lloyd Self, mother; Altha (Shelton) Self, brothers; Hugh L. Self, Troy Lewis Self, Sr., and infant brother.

He is survived by his wife; Lucille (Ball) Self, of the home, sons; Mike (Kathy) Self, George (Karen) Self, Jr. John (Leslie) Self, and Mike (Donna) Poteete, daughters; Beverly (R.D.) Gunter, Linda (Mike) Jacobson, Vonda (Mark) Holt, Lisa (Ray) Elkins, sisters; Lora Goode of Hot Springs, Ruby (Reid) Cook of Hot Springs, and Hazel Dean Silvers of S.C., a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. All of whom were very special to him.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 26, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, with Rev. Mark Elkins and Rev. Terry Green officiating. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27,2009 at Antioch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. prior to the service in the chapel.
