Published: 01/30/2014

Charles H. Denton, age 88, of Newport, TN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, January 26, 2014, in the home of his son and family in Charleston, South Carolina.

Charles was born in his family home in New Market, TN on October 27, 1925, as the only child of Virgil Denton and Maude Harrington Denton.

He served with his family on the family farm and then later served in the United States Army during World War II. He recently received a Certificate of Honor from the Veterans Association in Charleston, SC.

He also retired from both American Enka Corporation in Morristown and from Parks Belk in Newport.

Charles loved God first and was a member of the loving Northport Baptist Church. His only other great love was his family, and, most especially his loving wife.

He is survived by his devoted wife Mary, his only son Jeff, his daughter-in-love Prisca, three adoring granddaughters, Jennifer Leigh, Madison Rose, and Mahli Paige, as well as two great-grandson Charles Michael and AJ Denton. He will be missed and remembered by his many faithful friends and extended family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 30, 2014, from 5:007:00 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2014, in the Manes Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Kris Brady of Northport Baptist Church will be officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Northport Baptist Church and Hospice in Charleston. His family wishes to thank all the loving friends in both Newport, TN and Charleston, SC, who have made so many gracious calls, visits, and tender gestures, and who have shared as witnesses to the happy life of this quietly great man, Charles Denton.
