Hugh William "Bill" Bryant

Published: 11/09/2012

Hugh William "Bill" Bryant of Austin, Texas, passed away November 9, 2012.  Bill was born in Cosby, Tennessee on April 4, 1931, to William McKinley and Dicie Hartsell Bryant.  He was married to Alice Redmond on June 18, 1954.

Bill served his country as a veteran of the Korean War in the United States Air Force.

He worked at Convair/General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas, for 19 years in the Nuclear Aircraft and Space Propulsion Division.  Some of the radiation detection instruments Bill calibrated for NASA were left on the moon as part of the Apollo Program. He was later employed for over 19 years at The University of Texas at Austin where he retired as the Director of Environmental Safety and Health.  He was a charter member and an Emeritus Fellow of the Health Physics Society.

Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed serving his church and community as a basketball and softball coach, Sunday School teacher, superintendent, and deacon-most recently at Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin, Texas.  In Bill's words, "God has been good to me, gave me a great family and has provided every need."  He was a faithful servant, loving husband and father, and loyal friend.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Alice, his parents and his sister, Marie Bryant Carrell.

Bill is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Betty and Russell Barrett, Rhonda and Ken O'Brien, and Donna and Rodney Lowry; grandsons and their spouses, Justin and Stephanie Barrett, Brandon Barrett, Taylor and Bailey O'Brien, and Zachary Lowry; and granddaughters Rebekah and Kathryn O'Brien, and Sydney Lowry.

The family is thankful to all those who visited, sent cards, called, prayed for and cared for Bill during his illness.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from three o'clock until five o'clock in the afternoon, on Sunday, the 11th of November 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.

A funeral service will be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 12th of November 2012, in the main sanctuary of Great Hills Baptist Church, 10500 Jollyville Road, Austin, Texas with Dr. Danny Forshee and the Rev. Dr. Harold O'Chester officiating.   Interment with US Air Force Honors will follow in the Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, Austin, Texas.

In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family suggests donations be made to Great Hills Baptist Church at 10500 Jollyville Road, Austin, Texas, 78759; Crestview Retirement Community http://www.mrcaff.org/making_difference.php; or Hospice Brazos Valley http://www.hospicebrazosvalley.org/donation.html.
