Suiva Neas Gregg, 94, of the St. James Community of
Greeneville, died Saturday, February 27, 2010. She was the daughter of Alvin Paul and Cora Almer Neas and
the widow of James Carter Gregg.
She attended St. James High School and graduated in
1937. She and her husband, Carter,
lived on a farm and raised tobacco and other crops.
After her children were born, she worked as a cook at St.
James School for about 12 years.
She was famous for her rolls, coconut cream pies, and cranberry
crunch. She also worked at Hurd
Lock and The Austin Company. After
retirement from The Austin Company, she worked at Takoma Hospital, Holston
Home, and West Main Restaurant.
Her great love was cooking, and she was very sad when she was no longer
able to get up and cook things.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law: Peggy Joyce and Oscar Holt, and Linda
Sue Gammon; a son and daughter-in-law:
James and Carolyn Gregg; four grandchildren and their spouses: Victor and Anita Conner of Greeneville, VeVette and Rob Turner of
Toronto, Canada, Christy and Stuart Hoeke of Greeneville, and Lori and Miles
Harshbarger of Burlington, Indiana; and eight great grandchildren: Cameron and Colbie Conner, Peyton and
Park Turner, Benjamin and Claire Hoeke, and Eli and Liberty Harshbarger; many
nieces and nephews; and special friends: Wayne Gunter, Mary Ann Owenby and Pam
Thacker.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Terrance Gregg,
and three brothers: Truman, Mark and Nuel Neas.
She was a life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church
where all her ancestors were also members. She was a faithful member of the Young at Hearts as long as
she was able.
The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at
Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home. The
body will remain at the funeral home until time to be taken to St. James
Lutheran Church to lie in state for 1/2 hour preceding the funeral service at
2:00 p.m. Wednesday. Pastor
Michael Jannett will officiate.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Victor Conner, Stuart Hoeke, Miles
Harshbarger, Rob Turner, Tim Neas, and Hank Gregg. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the St. James Young
at Hearts Group.
